When designing ‘Tasmania, after the fires’, I couldn’t resist creating this companion piece, based on my favourite Australian cryptid, the Tasmanian Tiger/Thylacine. Stitched in the same threads as ‘After the fires’, this little pincushion celebrates the enigmatic creature that still haunts the bushland.
This beautiful colourised footage of the last Tasmanian Tiger in captivity from the Australian National Film and Sound Archive is a such a slight remnant of this amazing creature. Hunted to extinction in the mistaken belief that they were a threat to sheep-grazing, the Thylacine is still regularly reported in sightings in Tasmania and the mainland every year. There is also some talk of bringing it back through genetic de-extinction.
Personally, I’d love to catch a glimpse of tawny stripes running through the forest, and I hope stitching this brings you a sense of mystery and wonder.
My model was stitched on 32-count ‘Flax’, using Cottage Garden Threads and finished with Liberty Tana Lawn. Hard-copy and PDF charts are available exclusively from my Etsy store, as well as the finishing fabric and threadpacks.
